Wine

Welcome to the Official BeWine site. This site is here for you to learn about BeWine, download all BeWine related files and keep up with current BeWine events.

This site will be updated as frequently as practical. Progress of BeWine will be slow at first, so updates may come equally slow. However, we intend to keep the site fresh! Take a look at the news page for updates now and then.

Should you feel this site needs any update or you have information to submit which would be useful to the cause, please mail us. See the contact page for contact info.

About The BeWine Project:

Hey! You are a BeOS user. It is your OS of choice. The problem is... well... BeOS is young; with youth comes a lack of software. Sure there are TONS of BeOS apps and utilities by now, but what about all those other apps you used in your other OS? You know, Windows®. You love using BeOS but, frankly, there are a lot of things you are used to doing in your Windows® apps. A few things can only be done with those apps. Until BeWine, you'd be forced to reboot every time you needed to change to use one of those apps.

With BeWine, that should be a thing of the past. Yes, we're thinking with optimism, here. However, the fact is, the Wine project has proven successful for many people running many Windows® apps in various Un*x varients. Productivity, graphics and even games software which traditionally requires Windows® to run, is being successfully used from within non-Windows® Operating Systems.

What is it?

The BeWine project is a branch (or BeOS-specific extension) of the Wine project. Wine stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator." Instead of emulating an OS or an entire machine in software, Wine seeks to recreate (from scratch) the APIs that are required to run
Windows® software. Simply put, APIs are the pieces of code (software) required by your apps that the Operating System normally provides. It is the code that handles window management, clipboard, interface objects and more. Wine recreates all of that functionality in such a way that your Windows® apps will believe they are running in Windows® when they are not. Check out the Wine Headquarters for the technical details, for now. Once BeWine has reached usability, we will post technical specifications on this site.
